八个字的最后一站。脚下这个东西，最不起眼，也最了不得——土。古人画土地：下面一横是地面，上面鼓起来的，是一个土堆。后来土堆变成一横。地面、土堆、大地——三层，就是土。土进了字，站在左边：地、场、城、墙——凡是在地上盖的、住的，都跟土。土加也是土地的地，土加完成是城——一层一层夯土筑出来的城。土还是字根：加啬是墙，两个人坐在土上是坐。学会一个土，你就认识了：土地、地方、城市、坐。中国人的乡愁是土做的。落叶归根——走得再远，也要回来看看脚下的土。日月水火山石田土——八个字，第一季完。

The last of our first eight characters: the humblest, greatest thing underfoot — earth. Ancestors drew the ground: one line for the surface, a mound swelling above it. The mound later flattened into a stroke. Surface, mound, earth — three layers, 土. In characters, 土 stands on the left: 地, 场, 城, 墙 — everything built or lived on earth. 土 + 也 = 地 'earth'; 土 + 成 = 城 'city wall', rammed layer by layer from earth itself. 土 keeps working: +啬 = 墙 'wall'; two people 人人 on the earth = 坐 'to sit'. Learn one 土, and you know four HSK words: earth, place, city, to sit. Chinese nostalgia is made of earth: fallen leaves return to the roots — however far you go, come back to your soil. Season one complete.
