古人抬头看太阳和月亮，低下头，看见了不会动的巨人——山。三座山峰并排一站：中间高，两边低。这就是山，三千年没挪过一步。甲骨文里，三峰连着一条地平线。到今天，还是这么写。山进了字，常常站在左边：峰、岩、岭——都是从山里来的。山加夆是山峰的峰，山加石是岩石的岩。石头站在山上，就是岩。山还是字根：加令是岭，加夹是峡，鸟落在山上是岛——海上的山。学会一个山，你就认识了：山、爬山、火山、山水。孔子登过泰山，说：登泰山而小天下。站上山顶，天下都变小了。一个字，三千年。

Ancestors looked up at sun and moon — then looked down and saw the motionless giants: mountains. Three peaks in a row, tall in the middle — that's 山, unmoved for 3,000 years. In oracle bone, three peaks stand on a horizon line. We still write it the same way today. In characters, 山 stands on the left: 峰 peak, 岩 rock, 岭 ridge — all from mountains. 山 + 夆 = 峰 'peak'; 山 + 石 = 岩 'rock' — a stone standing on a mountain. 山 keeps working: +令 = 岭 'ridge'; +夹 = 峡 'gorge'; a bird 鸟 on a mountain = 岛 'island'.
