你天天见它，但它的本义，会让你重新看见太阳。三千多年前，古人抬头看太阳，画下一个圆。圆，是太阳的轮廓；中间那一点，让它不会和口混掉。太阳东升西落，走完一天。所以日，也是一天：一日三餐，日日夜夜。太阳站上地平线，就是旦。元旦的旦，新年的第一个日出。日还是最活跃的字根：加上月亮就是明，加上生就是星。学会一个日，你就认识了：日出、明天、生日、星期天。中国人说日上三竿，是吐槽一个人睡懒觉。一个字，三千年。

You see it every day — but its original meaning will change how you see the sun. 3,000 years ago, our ancestors looked up at the sun — and drew a circle. The circle is the sun's outline. The dot inside keeps it from being confused with 口 'mouth'. The sun crosses the sky in one day — so 日 also means 'a day': three meals a day, day and night. The sun standing on the horizon — that's 旦 dàn, New Year's Day. 日 is the most fertile radical: + moon = 明 bright; + grow = 星 star. Learn one 日, and you know four HSK words: sunrise, tomorrow, birthday, Sunday. One character, three thousand years.
