黑夜里最珍贵的东西，人类用了五十万年。这个字，你每顿饭都见得到。五十万年前，北京的周口店就有了火。古人把跳动的火苗画了下来。中间一股主火苗，两边溅出火星。这就是火——四千年，还没熄。火进了字里，有时站左边，有时跑到字底下变成四个点。煮、热、照，底下都是火。火加丁是灯，火加因是烟，火加少是炒——炒菜的炒。学会一个火，你就认识了：火车、火锅、烤鸭、热闹。冬天最暖的场面：一家人围着火锅。中国人祝日子好，叫红红火火。一个字，三千年。

The most precious thing at night — humans have used it for 500,000 years. You see this character at every meal. 500,000 years ago fire already burned at Zhoukoudian, near Beijing. Our ancestors drew its leaping flame. One main flame, sparks flying on both sides — that's 火. Four thousand years, never gone out. In characters, fire stands left or turns into four dots at the bottom — 煮, 热, 照 all stand on fire. Fire + 丁 = 灯 'lamp'; + 因 = 烟 'smoke'; + 少 = 炒 'stir-fry'.
