Writing Brush
毛笔máo bǐ
A tapered bundle of animal hair set in a bamboo shaft — the main tool of Chinese writing for two thousand years. The hair decides how it behaves: weasel (狼毫) gives crisp, springy lines; goat (羊毫) is soft and holds more ink; mixed (兼毫) sits between and is what most beginners use.
Craft & origin ·
The brush is counted first among the Four Treasures of the Study. A common misunderstanding is worth clearing up: 狼毫 'wolf hair' is not wolf at all — it is weasel. The name is a naming habit carried over, not a description of the animal.
