What the "Four Treasures of the Study" actually are

Brush, ink, paper and inkstone — 文房四宝 (wén fáng sì bǎo). The phrase settled in the Northern Song dynasty, when the scholar Su Yijian wrote a book devoted to just these four objects and their making.

None of them is worn on the body. They sit on a desk, and everything about them serves one act: writing. In an age when paper and books were expensive, writing well was a real path forward.

ItemWhat it isBest-known originWhat to look at

InkInk stick, ground with water on the stoneOld Huizhou, AnhuiSoot type
PaperPaper for brush and inkJing county, Anhui (xuan paper)Raw or sized
InkstoneThe stone you grind ink onZhaoqing, Guangdong (duan stone)Grinds fast, spares the brush

    The brush: softness comes first

Brush tips are made from animal hair, and the difference in stiffness is the first thing to understand:

  • Weasel hair (lang hao): stiff and springy, good for small characters and running script. The name does not mean wolf.
  • Goat hair (yang hao): soft, holds a lot of ink, good for large characters and clerical script.
  • Mixed hair (jian hao): the two blended. The safest starting point for a beginner.
  • The best-known origin is Huzhou in Zhejiang, where brush-making in Shanlian town goes back centuries.

Ink: it takes a while to grind

Traditional practice does not use bottled ink. It uses an ink stick, ground in circles on the stone with a little water.

By soot type there are two main kinds: pine-soot ink (cooler, matte) and oil-soot ink (brighter). Painting and calligraphy mostly use oil-soot.

The famous origin is Huizhou ink from old Huizhou in Anhui, known since the Tang and Song.

A phrase you will hear is "ink divides into five colours" — burnt, dense, heavy, light, clear. One stick, five depths, controlled by how much water you use.

Bottled ink is what most people use now. But plenty of people keep the grinding — it is the part of the process that slows you down.

Paper: why xuan paper costs what it costs

The reference paper is xuan paper from Jing county, Anhui, made mainly from sandalwood bark and rice straw. Long fibres make it strong and slow to age — old paintings survive for centuries on it, which is where the saying "paper lives a thousand years" comes from.

There are two kinds, and you must ask which one you are buying:

    TypeMadeBehaviourSuits
Raw (sheng xuan)UntreatedDrinks water, ink spreadsFreehand painting, running script
Sized (shu xuan)Treated with alumInk stays where you put itFine-line painting, small regular script

On raw paper a single stroke keeps spreading; on sized paper it holds. Beginners usually start on sized paper, or on cheap practice paper that you do not mind wasting.

The inkstone: one good stone lasts a lifetime

The inkstone is the stone you grind ink on. It has to do two things well: grind ink quickly, and not wear out the brush tip.

Four stones are traditionally named as the best:

    StoneOriginNote
DuanZhaoqing, GuangdongThe most famous; good stone shows natural "eyes"
SheWuyuan, Jiangxi and She county, AnhuiFine grain, grinds fast
TaoZhuoni and Min county, GansuGreenish stone, known since the Song
ChengniShanxiThe only one that is fired clay, not stone

The inkstone is the most durable of the four. A good one lasts decades, which is why old inkstones are usually things a family kept.

Where these objects sit in Chinese culture

On the desk. A scholar's study held more than a table: brush stand, brush pot, water pot, paperweight, seal. Grinding ink, laying out paper, weighing it down — a sequence you complete before you sit down to work.

Good handwriting was a requirement, not a hobby. From the imperial examinations onward, handwriting was basic equipment for a career; by the Ming and Qing it could affect whether you were accepted at all.

The first-writing ceremony. Many primary schools now hold a 开笔礼 for new pupils: straighten the clothes, dot the forehead with cinnabar, write the character 人 (person). Be clear about this one — it is a revival of recent decades, not an ancient fixed rite. What it borrows is old: you begin with a brush and a single character.

As a gift. A set of these four was a respectable gift for a scholar or a child starting school, and still is, especially around the start of the school year.

    How to start

You do not need all four at once.

  • One medium mixed-hair brush, one bottle of ink, one stack of practice paper. That is enough to begin, for very little money.
  • Later, add sized xuan paper and a basic inkstone.
  • Ink sticks and duan stones can wait until you know you enjoy this.
  • The weight of these objects was never in their price. It is in the thing they are tied to: sitting down quietly and finishing what you started.
