Gold, jade, pearl and moissanite, sorted by material rather than by custom — what each one actually is, how to read the numbers stamped on it, and how the pieces are made.
We already have a page for lucky charms, sorted by custom. This one is sorted by material instead: fineness, stones, and how things are made. Neither page tells you what an object will do for you.
The term 千足金 (“thousand-pure gold”) is obsolete. Amendment No. 1 to GB 11887 took effect on 4 May 2016 and removed it, along with 千足铂 and 千足银: the highest fineness a piece of jewellery may be labelled with is now 足金, at no less than 990 parts per thousand. A tag reading 千足金 today is not following the current standard.
China labels gold by fineness rather than by karat: 足金 (zú jīn) means at least 990 parts per thousand. The old term 千足金 for 999 was dropped from the national standard in 2016, so 990 and 999 are both simply 足金 today — the words on the tag matter less than the number.
Pure-gold pixiu bead bracelet, matte with a chiselled Heart Sutra
One matte pixiu bead and one polished, with the Heart Sutra chiselled into the sides. Putting a matte surface next to a bright one on the same piece is a common move in Chinese goldwork: the matte side shows the handiwork, the bright side shows the metal.
Pure-gold relief petal necklace, hammered, with turquoise
24K gold · AU999≈ $97
Petals raised in relief, hammer marks left showing on the surface, a turquoise set at the centre. Raising a sheet of gold by hammering is the thriftiest way to get volume in Chinese goldwork — a piece that looks substantial may weigh only a few grams.
The longevity lock is what relatives give a newborn, traditionally in silver and in gold in wealthier families. Wearing it as a slim everyday chain is a recent adaptation. The meaning here lies in what the giver intends, not in anything the object is claimed to do.
The gourd puns on 福禄 (blessing and emolument) and is one of the most common motifs in China — on gold, silver, jade and wood alike. Here the vine is chiselled into the band and the surface left matte: the finish that has been sold as “ancient-method gold” in recent years, valued for its handmade look and its lack of glare.
24K is 999 parts per thousand, 18K is 750, 14K is 585. The reason almost every stone-set piece is K gold and not pure gold is mechanical rather than aesthetic: pure gold sits around 2.5 on the Mohs scale, so prongs made of it bend and lose their grip.
18K gold double-sided heart pendant, mother-of-pearl and red agate
18K gold · AU750≈ $161
750 parts per thousand. A double-sided setting that has to survive daily wear is not something pure gold can hold — which is the whole reason K gold exists. Mother-of-pearl and red agate are inexpensive stones here; the work is in the gold frame.
585 parts per thousand, amethyst as the centre stone with topaz for brightness. Worth being clear about: this multi-stone row setting is a European convention, not a Chinese one. The Chinese tradition of pairing gold with stones runs through filigree instead — more on that below.
A single amethyst in four prongs. This is K gold at its most practical: studs get worn daily, slept in and splashed, and pure gold is the weaker choice for that.
“You can have eyes and still not know gold-inlaid jade” is the Chinese saying behind this pairing — from the story of the He Shi Bi, a jade disc said to have been chipped and repaired with gold. Jade splits into two families that Chinese both calls 玉: nephrite (Hetian, a soft stone) and jadeite (a hard pyroxene).
The practical difficulty in gold-inlaid jade is that the two materials differ four or five times over on the hardness scale: the gold has to hold the jade without chipping it, which comes down to the shape of the setting and how it is annealed. This is Hetian nephrite — darker, with the oily sheen the family is known for.
Jadeite is the harder, brittler of the two jades. Guanyin is among the most carved subjects, and the first thing a trade buyer looks at is the face. If you shop for jadeite, ask whether it is Type A — untreated by acid, resin or dye.
Gold tracing is painted onto the jade surface and fired at low heat — much cheaper in gold than inlay, and a technique with Ming and Qing precedents. A bangle has to be cut as one continuous ring from a single piece of stone, never assembled, which is why bangles always cost more than a plaque from the same material.
China is the world's dominant source of freshwater pearls, centred on Zhuji in Zhejiang. The trade is old, but the large, round freshwater pearls sold today are recent: cultured freshwater pearls were small and irregular for most of the twentieth century, and only became round at scale in the 1990s.
Freshwater pearls strung with turquoise. Turquoise has one of the longest histories of any coloured stone in China — in use since the Neolithic and especially common on Tibetan and Mongolian silverwork — and is one of the few coloured stones with a real place in Chinese tradition.
“Edison pearl” is the trade name for a beaded freshwater pearl developed in China around 2011, able to reach saltwater sizes and coming in a wider range of colours. Edison is a trademark, not an origin and not a species — something sellers rarely volunteer.
Pearls strung with coloured stones on one strand — a common arrangement in the “new Chinese style” jewellery of the last few years, using the pearls to steady the colour and the colour to pull the pearls out of the dowdy register.
Moissanite is silicon carbide. Natural moissanite exists only in tiny amounts in meteorites; everything sold is grown in a lab. Its dispersion is higher than diamond's (2.65 against 2.42), so it throws more coloured fire — a fact often used as a selling point, and not the same thing as being a diamond.
1-carat moissanite pendant in PT950 platinum
PT950 platinum · moissanite≈ $111
PT950 is platinum — not the same thing as white K gold. Platinum is white all the way through and needs no rhodium plating; white K gold is gold alloyed with palladium or nickel and can yellow over the years. Worth pinning the seller down on which one you are being shown.
A certified one-carat moissanite in a silver setting shaped as a zodiac animal. In Chinese e-commerce it is routinely written 莫桑钻 — the character for diamond used loosely. It is a habit of the trade, not a gemological category; decide which stone you actually want before you buy.
A hoop packed with small marquise-cut stones — the cheapest and highest-volume way this material gets used. At small sizes the fire concentrates, so it reads plausibly at a distance and only gives itself away up close.
Gold or silver is drawn down to about 0.2 mm, then built into shapes by eight techniques — filing, filling, assembling, soldering, stacking, laying, weaving and braiding — before stones go in. Listed in 2008 as national intangible cultural heritage, one of the “Eight Crafts of Yanjing”. The Wanli emperor’s gold crown from Dingling was woven from 518 strands of 0.2 mm gold wire, with joints and breaks nowhere in the mesh.
No moulds: a set of punches is struck by hand to raise relief in the surface. The Heart Sutra on the pixiu bead above is chased this way. The tell is the line — hand chasing varies in weight, machine stamping does not.
Not an ancient technique but a recent market category: matte, slightly granular, deliberately unpolished. The name borrows the word “ancient”; the process is modern. Pay for weight and design, not for the phrase.
Where gold sits in custom
Wedding gold given by the groom's family: classically a ring, a necklace and earrings — the “three golds” — with a bangle and a pendant added for the “five golds” in more elaborate cases. Counts and names vary by region; there is no single national rule.
The longevity lock is a gift to a newborn, traditionally in silver and in gold where the family could afford it. It is an expression on the giver's part, and on this page it carries no claim about what it does.
Trading old gold in by weight, or melting it down and having it remade, is routine in China. A “family gold bangle” may not be the original object at all — which is exactly where gold differs from jade: gold can be remade, jade cannot.
The “metal” of the five phases is not the metal you wear. Wuxing is an abstract system of classification; gold is a specific substance. Reading “my chart lacks metal” as “buy gold jewellery” conflates two different languages — and it is not how the system was used either.
