人类的第一件工具，是用它做的。这个字里，还藏着一座悬崖。甲骨文的石：上面是悬崖的崖边，下面挂着一块方方的石头。上崖下石——这就是石。人造的第一把刀，就是这么来的。石头进了字：砖、砚、碑——盖房、写字、刻字，全靠它。石加皮是破，石加专是砖，石加见是砚——砚台，磨墨写字的石头。石还是字根：加卑是石碑的碑，加麻是磨。学会一个石，你就认识了：石头、石油、砖、破。中国人把石头当朋友：苏州园林里一块太湖石，能看半天；门口一对石狮子，替你守家。一个字，三千年。

Humanity's first tool was made of it. A whole cliff hides inside this character. Oracle-bone 石: a cliff ledge above, a square stone hanging below. Cliff over stone — that's 石. The first stone knife began right here. Stone enters characters: 砖 brick, 砚 inkstone, 碑 stele — building, writing, carving. 石 + 皮 = 破 'break'; + 专 = 砖 'brick'; + 见 = 砚 'inkstone' — the stone for grinding ink. 石 keeps working: +卑 = 碑 'stele'; +麻 = 磨 'to grind'. Learn one 石, and you know four HSK words: stone, petroleum, brick, broken. Chinese treat stones as friends: a taihu rock in a Suzhou garden rewards a long gaze; stone lions guard the gate.
