Zhagana lies in Diebu County, southern Gansu; the Tibetan name means 'stone box' — cliffs of limestone several hundred metres high enclose a small mountain basin, with four Tibetan villages clinging to the slopes. The day starts in Dongwa village, climbs to the panorama deck, walks to Fairy Meadow and Fairy Lake, calls at Lhasang Monastery, follows the village boardwalks, goes deep to the stone forest in the afternoon, and ends with a Tibetan dinner back in the village.
The recommended plan is “One Day in Zhagana — the Stone City and Its Grasslands”: about A full day · about 10 hours, 8 stops —Dongwa Village · Arrival and Breakfast, The Panorama Deck, Fairy Meadow · the Alpine Grassland, Fairy Lake, Lhasang Monastery, Between the Villages · Timber Houses and Barley Racks, The Stone Forest and the Skyline Gap, Tibetan Family Dinner. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
Zhagana sits in Yiwa township, Diebu County, Gannan, Gansu, at 2,800 to 3,300 metres — a village boxed in by mountains: Mount Guanggai to the north and sheer limestone walls on the other three sides, so that from afar the village seems shut inside a stone chest, hence the Tibetan name 'stone box'. Four villages make it up — Dongwa, Yeri, Dari and Daiba, stacked up the slope from low to high, all Tibetan timber houses and barley racks. Between the cliffs lie meadows, streams and stands of old forest, with plenty of walking routes; the best known runs to Fairy Meadow and Fairy Lake and makes a half-day return. The area belongs to the story of the Rock Road — a century ago the botanist Joseph Rock lived here and sent photographs west, calling it the closest thing to Eden he had seen. In the villages stands Lhasang Monastery with its prayer wheels, white stupa and prayer flags. The boardwalks are in good shape, but the ground rises — take it slowly. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.
Best time · 最佳季节:六月到十月最好;六月杜鹃和青稞返青,七八月草最绿野花最多,九月底十月初秋色金黄;冬天雪封山,部分栈道关闭June to October is best; June for azaleas and greening barley, July and August the greenest grass and most wildflowers, late September into October for golden autumn; in winter snow closes passes and some boardwalks

The lowest village in the stone box — a Tibetan breakfast and the barley racks.
Dongwa is the lowest of the four villages and where the visitor centre and most lodging sit. In the early morning the mist often hangs on, roof tops poking through with the cliffs behind — the classic Zhagana picture. Breakfast is at your guesthouse or a village shop: butter tea, tsampa, steamed buns and eggs; if you can manage it, try tsampa — roasted barley flour kneaded with butter tea and eaten by hand. Barley racks stand all over the village, hung golden with grain in autumn. The altitude starts at 2,800 metres — walk slowly.

Four villages, cliffs and terraced fields in one frame — the Zhagana postcard.
The deck is built halfway up the slope: look up and the cliffs close in a ring; look down and the four villages step up the hillside, timber houses, barley racks, terraced fields and a small river all in the frame. While the mist holds, the villages surface from it layer by layer, like a curtain rising; once the sun is out, the light sweeps from the peaks to the valley floor. At busy times there is a queue for the best angles — ten minutes earlier makes a real difference. It is windy on the deck, so keep your jacket on.

A whole slope of green between the cliffs, thick with wildflowers in summer — the first goal of the walk.
Fairy Meadow is a broad alpine grassland slung between two cliffs, looking from below like a green carpet laid on the mountainside. In summer the grass is at its greenest, small wildflowers spread across it, and yaks and horses graze; when you are tired you simply sit down on the grass with the valley and the villages in front of you. The route is dirt and stone steps with a fair gradient — under an hour at a slow pace. Do not cross into the fenced plots, which are seeded by the village, and however calm the yaks look, keep your distance and do not tease them.

A small pool at the foot of the cliffs that on a clear day turns the rock face upside down.
Fairy Lake is small — one pool at the foot of the cliffs — but well placed: a whole rock face behind it, and on windless days the water turns stone and cloud upside down, which makes it the walk's terminus. Prayer flags and mani piles stand at the water's edge — stones carved with scripture heaped by Tibetan villagers; do not move them. Lunch on a rock with your own rations; the water is icy. Wind tends to rise in the afternoon, so come early for the reflection. You are above 3,000 metres — hurry and you will be breathing hard.

The Tibetan monastery hanging above the villages — white stupa, golden roof, and a turn of the prayer wheels.
Lhasang Monastery stands above Yeri village — not large, but superbly placed: cliffs behind, villages before, the white stupa and golden roof easy to spot among the timber houses. When visiting: walk clockwise, no photography inside the halls unless told otherwise, keep your voice low, and never step on the door sills. Outside runs a ring of prayer wheels — turn them with the right hand, walking as you go. The monks do not usually start conversations, but a polite greeting before a question is always welcome. The golden roof is brightest when the light comes slantwise in the afternoon.

The stretch from Yeri to Dari neither climbs nor dips — an easy walk with the village itself on both sides: Tibetan timber houses all sloped roofs and big windows, corn hanging under the eaves; fields rotating barley, rapeseed and potatoes; drying racks by the path. Village children will greet you — answer 'nǐ hǎo' and they will be delighted. There are dogs about, all watching their homes; fierce-looking but tied or free-ranging — do not reach out. This is the stretch to take slowly and see how people actually live.

Into the cracks of the cliffs, where the sky narrows to a single line — the clearest explanation of the name 'stone box'.
Deep in the reserve the trail takes you into the cracks between the cliffs, which close in steeply on both sides until, at the narrowest, only a seam of sky shows above — the most literal picture of the 'stone box'. The rock is sedimentary, its layered bands holding traces of small fossils. Late in the afternoon the slanting sun turns the stone from grey to gold. Parts of the trail are narrow and damp — wear grippy shoes and hold children's hands. Longer routes go deeper and need a guide; they do not fit in one day.
Practical note · 实用提示
路窄湿滑穿防滑鞋;深处徒步要向导,别自己乱走;天黑前往回走。
Wear grippy shoes for the narrow, damp path; deep routes need a guide — do not wander alone; head back before dark.
Most guesthouses are family homes, and dinner is home Tibetan cooking: juéma rice (rice with 'human-fruit' root), Tibetan buns (thin-skinned beef or mutton dumplings), grilled yak, stir-fried pork with sour radish, butter tea and highland barley wine. Some houses have a hearth — a square fire pit to sit around. Zhagana at night is very quiet, and the stars outnumber anything in a city — walk ten minutes and look up. Go easy on the barley wine: at 3,000 metres it bites fast. If you want sunrise tomorrow, ask your host for the best angle.
