Shangri-La lies in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of north-west Yunnan at 3,300 metres — a small Tibetan highland town. The day begins at the great prayer wheel of the Dukezong old town, goes on to Songzanlin, the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan, takes a Tibetan lunch, spends the afternoon in Pudacuo national park at Shudu Lake and Bita Lake, reaches Napa Lake for grassland and wetland at dusk, and returns to the old town for a Tibetan hotpot and the Guozhuang dancing on Moonlight Square.
The recommended plan is “One Day in Shangri-La — Songzanlin Monastery and Pudacuo”: about A full day · about 14 hours, 8 stops —Dukezong Old Town · Great Prayer Wheel, Songzanlin Monastery, Tibetan Lunch · Yak and Butter Tea, Pudacuo · Shudu Lake, Bita Lake, Napa Lake · Yila Grassland, Dukezong Old Town · Tibetan Hotpot, Moonlight Square · Guozhuang Dancing. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
Shangri-La sits in the north-west corner of Yunnan, in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture; it was called Zhongdian until 2001, when it took the name of the paradise in Lost Horizon. At 3,300 metres this is high country — walk fast and you feel it, so take the first day slowly. The Dukezong old town has more than thirteen hundred years behind it and was once an important stop on the Tea Horse Road: stone lanes, wooden houses, and on Guishan hill a great prayer wheel that takes several people pulling together to turn. Out of town, Songzanlin is a hillside of gilded roofs known as the 'little Potala' and the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan; Pudacuo national park was the first national park in mainland China, with the high lakes Shudu and Bita set among pasture and old-growth forest; and Napa Lake changes character — a lake in the rains, grassland in the dry season, and full of migrant birds in winter. This is Tibetan country: butter tea, barley and yak are everyday things, and at a temple, a mani pile or prayer flags, watch quietly and walk clockwise. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.

一千三百年的茶马古道古城,龟山顶上一个几个人合力才转得动的大经筒。
A thirteen-century Tea Horse Road town, with a prayer wheel on Guishan hill that takes several people together to turn.
Dukezong is Shangri-La's old town; in Tibetan the name means 'moonlight city', and it has thirteen hundred years behind it as an important staging post on the Tea Horse Road, where caravans carrying Yunnan tea to Tibet passed through. Stone lanes and wooden Tibetan houses step up and down the slope. On Guishan hill at the centre stands a great prayer wheel that needs several people pulling together to move; those who turn it recite scripture as they walk, and locals and visitors both come. Mornings are quiet with good light, and from the hill you look down on the town's roofs, tier above tier.
Practical note · 实用提示
转经筒要顺时针转、几个人一起用力;古城石板路滑,穿防滑鞋。
Turn the wheel clockwise with others; the stone lanes are slippery — wear grippy shoes.
Songzanlin stands north of Shangri-La, formally Ganden Sumtseling — the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan and an important Gelug foundation, known as the 'little Potala' because it climbs a hillside with gilded roofs rising tier on tier. There is a lake in front, and on a clear day the whole monastery is mirrored in it, which is the finest view. Getting in means a long flight of steps with monks' quarters either side — red and white walls, windows edged in yellow. Inside the halls are murals, thangkas and the smell of butter lamps, with the sound of chanting coming and going. Walk clockwise, do not photograph inside the halls, keep quiet, and take off your hat.
Practical note · 实用提示
殿内不能拍照、不能戴帽子;台阶长,慢慢爬,别急。
No photography or hats inside the halls; the steps are long — climb slowly, do not rush.
Food in Shangri-La is Tibetan: butter tea, brick tea churned with butter and salt, served hot, savoury, warming straight through; tsampa, roasted barley flour pressed into balls with a little butter tea, the most traditional way to eat; and yak braised, stir-fried or made into hotpot, firm and full-flavoured; with Tibetan dumplings, barley bread, dried cheese and Tibetan noodles. The richness and salt are there for a reason — it is cold and people work hard. Your appetite may be off on the first day at altitude, so start with soup and eat lightly rather than stuffing yourself.

Mainland China's first national park — Shudu Lake a deep, dark blue among pasture and old-growth forest.
Pudacuo lies east of Shangri-La and was the first national park in mainland China, at around 3,500 metres. Shudu is the principal lake, deep and dark blue, with broad meadow at its shore where yaks and horses graze, and dense spruce and fir forest behind. You enter by shuttle, and a boardwalk runs along the lake — you can walk a stretch or ride. The boardwalk is three or four kilometres, level and easy, so go slowly and rest often.
Practical note · 实用提示
海拔三千五百米,走慢点;园里禁烟火,垃圾自己带走。
At 3,500 metres, walk slowly; no fires in the park and carry your litter out.
Bita Lake lies deep inside Pudacuo; in Tibetan the name means 'place where oaks grow like felt', with dense old-growth forest on every side and a small wooded island at its centre. The surface is still and on a clear day holds the surrounding hills and trees. It sits a little higher than Shudu, and the boardwalk threads through the forest, quiet enough to hear birds and your own steps on the leaf litter. This is usually the quietest stretch of the day.
Practical note · 实用提示
海拔高,走栈道别赶;林子里冷,穿好外套。
It is high here — do not hurry the boardwalk; the forest is cold, so keep your jacket on.
Napa lies north-west of Shangri-La and is an unusual lake: in the rains it fills into a sheet of water, in the dry season it drains back into grassland — the locals call that part Yila. You can ride horses on the grass, hills stand beyond, and on a fine day the cloud is low and its shadows walk across the slopes in patches. In winter black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese come to over-winter, making it good bird country. Dusk is the best time: raking light, cattle going home, cloud shadows moving over the grass.

Yak and mushrooms in a copper pot with everyone round it — a highland evening stops being cold.
Coming back to Dukezong for dinner is the most comfortable end to the day. Tibetan hotpot is a copper pot over charcoal, with yak, beef bone broth, radish, potato, mushrooms and greens, eaten with a dipping sauce; there is also yak hotpot, chicken stewed with matsutake, and Tibetan black pork. The old town's lanes are full of restaurants, bars and craft shops, so wander after eating among the wooden houses and hanging prayer flags. Highland evenings cool fast — add a jacket.

In the evening on Dukezong's Moonlight Square people gather as it gets dark, the music starts, and everyone joins hands in a ring for guozhuang — a Tibetan circle dance with simple steps, so you just keep time; the local grandparents do it best and visitors can join at any moment. You can also stand and watch and will have it in a few minutes. Dance a while, work up a sweat, sleep well at your guesthouse — and the highland sun will be bright early next morning.
