Chaka Salt Lake lies in the Qaidam basin west of Qinghai Lake, one of its four great salt lakes. The water is shallow and the salt floor white, and on a still, clear day the surface turns to a mirror — walking on it feels like walking in the sky, hence 'the mirror of the sky'. The day starts in Chaka town, enters the reserve for the salt sculptures and the little train out to the lake centre, walks barefoot on the salt flats, catches the sunset, and ends with a Qinghai-style dinner back in town.
The recommended plan is “One Day at Chaka Salt Lake — The Mirror of the Sky”: about Half to a full day · about 8 hours, 8 stops —Chaka Town · Breakfast, Salt Sculpture Plaza, The Little Train · Out to the Lake Centre, Walking the Salt Flats · The Mirror of the Sky, Lunch and the Salt Heritage Exhibit, Viewing Deck · Back into the Water, Sunset over the Salt Lake, Chaka Town · Dinner. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
Chaka Salt Lake sits beside Chaka town in Ulan County, Haixi, Qinghai; 'Chaka' is Tibetan for 'salt shore'. The lake covers more than a hundred square kilometres, its bed solid white salt up to seven or eight metres deep, covered by only a skin of water twenty or thirty centimetres at most. On a clear, windless day that thin sheet turns the sky upside down — clouds move under your feet and you stand between heaven and earth, which is exactly where the name 'mirror of the sky' comes from. Salt has been harvested here for over two thousand years, once carried west along the Silk Road; today the old salt-harvesting trains and rails remain along the lake as the best backdrops for photos. Great figures and animals carved from salt blocks — the salt sculptures — stand by the shore. To walk on the flats you hire overshoes or go barefoot; the salt grits underfoot, so go slowly. Weather decides everything here: one gust ripples the mirror away, so whether you catch the mirror is half luck. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.
Best time · 最佳季节:五月底到十月最好;六到八月晴天多、水面最平,「天空之镜」最容易出片;九月后天凉人少;冬春湖面结盐壳,景色不同但风大Late May to October is best; June to August brings the clearest skies and flattest water, when the 'mirror of the sky' photographs best; September is cooler and quieter; in winter and spring the lake crusts over with salt — a different look and a strong wind

A little town by the salt lake — a hot Qinghai breakfast before entering the reserve.
Chaka town is small, existing to serve the lake, with lodging and restaurants along the main road. Breakfast is Qinghai style: mutton soup, steamed buns, fried dough sticks and aocha — a salty tea boiled with brick tea, salt and prickly ash that locals drink. The town sits at about 3,100 metres, so walk slowly and do not run; some people feel a little light-headed the first day, a mild touch of altitude. Mornings are cold, a few degrees lower than Xining — wear a jacket. Buy water before entering, as it is pricier inside.

Figures and animals carved from solid salt blocks — the largest several storeys high.
Past the gate comes the field of salt sculptures: the Queen Mother of the West, Genghis Khan, camel caravans, animals — all built up layer by layer from large blocks of salt from the lake bonded with brine. They are reworked every year, for salt crumbles in wind and melts in water, and lasting a few years is already doing well. The tallest stand several storeys high; up close the surface has a faint blue-grey tint, the colour of 'green salt'. Shoot here first, then head for the lake centre when the afternoon light softens. The plaza is windy — hold on to your hat.

The old salt-harvest rails, now carrying visitors all the way to the lake-centre pier.
Narrow-gauge rails run out into the lake, laid in the days of salt hauling; sightseeing trains now run from the gate to the lake-centre pier in about twenty minutes. The carriages are open-sided, the wind blowing through the whole way, and it rides steadier seated than standing. You can also walk the boardwalk — over four kilometres, and exposed to the sun. The water is flattest and the salt whitest at the centre; nearly every 'mirror of the sky' picture is taken here. Do not wade straight off the train — pick a quieter stretch first.

Shoes off, into the shallow water — white salt below, blue sky above, walking on a mirror.
This is the lake's centrepiece: in the marked areas, shoes off (or in hired overshoes), step into water no deeper than your ankle over firm, gritty salt — it digs into the soles, so go slowly. Stand still, let the ripples settle, and the ground beneath becomes one whole mirror — clouds under your feet, your shadow beside you; queues for the picture are part of the deal. For a good reflection: get away from the crowd, shoot when the sun is low (before ten or after four), and wear bright colours. Salt stings cuts — stay out of the water if you have any; and the midday ultraviolet is fierce, painful within half an hour.

No wading with open cuts; midday UV is fierce — hat and sunblock essential; avoid the densest crowds for photos.
Lunch in the service area is simple: mianpian — small torn dough pieces boiled in soup, a Qinghai staple — fried noodles and yogurt; do not expect a feast. After eating, see the salt heritage exhibit: Chaka has been harvested since the Han dynasty, known in antiquity as Luxi, its salt travelling the Silk Road and the Tang-Tibet route; in modern times rails and little trains carried it, and in the old photographs wagons of green salt leave here for the whole country. The exhibit is small, twenty to thirty minutes — enough to shelter from the worst of the midday sun.

After four the light drops low — the second window for reflections, with fewer people than the morning.
After four the sun sinks, the angle lowers, shadows lengthen, and the reflections sharpen beyond what midday gives — the second window for the mirror, and most of the crowd pushed through in the morning. The viewing deck stands high on the shore and shows the salt pans laid out in squares, the pools left by harvesting. If your legs still work, wade a second time: far fewer people, and the wind is often softer than in the morning. Watch the forecast — rain tomorrow means a clouded surface the next day.

The sun drops behind the salt pans as the water turns from gold to pink-violet — the day's closing scene.
The sunset at Chaka is a clean one: the sun drops straight to the horizon with nothing in the way, the lake turning gold, then pink, then violet, before the dark comes and the salt lake lies still as if asleep. On the plateau the sun sets late — half past eight or nine in summer. The temperature falls fast afterwards, so put your jacket on at once. There is a last shuttle out of the reserve — check the time and do not miss it for one more picture. Much of the road back to town is unlit; drive slowly.
Practical note · 实用提示
日落后降温快,外套随身带;看好末班车时间,别误了出园。
Temperature drops fast after sunset — carry your jacket; check the last shuttle so you do not miss it.
The town's restaurants all cook Qinghai: hand-grabbed mutton (boiled plain and dipped in salt and pepper — good meat needs nothing more), niangpi (thick cold noodles dressed with chilli and vinegar, the Qinghai cold dish), kang-pot mutton (mutton and potatoes seared in an iron pot until crisp-edged — a big portion), yak jerky and tianpei, a sweet fermented oat dish. A day at the lake means sweat and wind, so eat early and sleep early. The town is at 3,100 metres — go easy on the alcohol, which bites harder at altitude.
