A morning swim at Dadonghai, a bowl of Hainan noodles at noon, the sea Guanyin at Nanshan and sunset at the Edge of the Sky, and an evening of old streets and seafood — eight stops, each with the Chinese you will actually use there.
The recommended plan is “One Day in Sanya — Island Breezes and Coconut Palms”: about A full day · about 13 hours, 8 stops —Dadonghai Beach, Luhuitou Park, Sanya Bay · Coconut Dream Corridor, Hainan Snacks · Baoluo Noodles, Nanshan · Sea Guanyin, Tianya Haijiao (Edge of the Sky), Jiefang Road Pedestrian Street, First Market · Seafood Cooked to Order. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
Sanya sits at the southern tip of Hainan, a city where you can swim even in winter, with sea, sand and coconut palms as its backdrop. This route runs east–town–west: a morning swim at Dadonghai, the view from Luhuitou, the Coconut Dream Corridor along Sanya Bay, Hainan snacks back in town at noon, the sea Guanyin at Nanshan in the afternoon, sunset at the Edge of the Sky in the evening, and Jiangfang Road and seafood at the First Market to finish. Sanya is hot with a fierce sun, so sunblock, water and avoiding midday are the three rules; the local speech is Hainanese, but Mandarin is standard in tourist areas and spoken slowly enough to follow. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.

The bay closest to town — the quietest hour for a swim is early.
Dadonghai is the beach closest to central Sanya, with fine sand and a gentle slope; early morning is quiet and the water clear, ideal for a first swim. By day it fills up, umbrellas packed side by side, but it is still fine for paddling and catching the sunrise. Changing rooms, showers and swim gear rental are right on the shore, making it the easiest place to start.

A hill south of town with the whole bay and city in one view.
Luhuitou is a small hill topped by a statue of a turning deer, from the Li people's legend of the same name. Ride the shuttle or walk up; the summit gives a fine view — Sanya Bay and the city towers on one side, the South China Sea on the other. The morning breeze is cool, and seeing the city's layout from here makes the rest of the day easier to plan.

一碗抱罗粉,把海南的甜酸辣尝个遍。
One bowl of Baoluo noodles puts Hainan's sweet, sour and hot all in one place.
Baoluo noodles are a Hainan classic: rice noodles in a lightly sweet-sour gravy with peanuts, pickles and lean pork — very appetising. Hainan also has Wenchang chicken, Jiaji duck and qingbuliang (a coconut-milk dessert bowl) worth trying. With the midday sun at its strongest, this is the hour to sit and eat slowly.
Practical note · 实用提示
抱罗粉有干拌和汤粉两种,先问清楚;清补凉是甜点,别当正餐。
Baoluo noodles come dry-tossed or in soup — ask which. Qingbuliang is a dessert, not a meal.
The Nanshan cultural area lies about forty kilometres west of town, best known for the Sea Guanyin: a three-faced statue over a hundred metres tall standing in the water, reached by a bridge over the sea. The grounds are large — from the gate to the statue is a fair walk, and a shuttle runs through. The sea and sky open wide here, and it is a quiet place.
Practical note · 实用提示

Tianya Haijiao is a rocky shore, best known for two great boulders carved with 'Edge of the Sky' and 'Corner of the Sea' — old China's idea of the end of the land. Late afternoon is the time to come: watch the sunset from the sand, and as the light goes the sea and the stones settle, the quietest moment of the day.

The busiest street in town — shopping and snacking in one place.
Jiefang Road is the main street of central Sanya, and its pedestrian stretch is the liveliest: malls and snack stalls on both sides selling tropical fruit, coconut jelly and dried seafood, along with all kinds of little shops. The day's heat has gone by evening, which makes this a comfortable stroll on the way to the First Market.
Practical note · 实用提示
热带水果买前先问价、试吃;拎着走一路会热,别买太多。
Ask prices and taste before buying fruit; it is hot to carry, so do not overbuy.
The First Market is Sanya's best-known place for seafood: choose fish, prawns, crab and shellfish in the market, then carry them to a nearby kitchen that charges by weight and cooks them steamed, chilli-fried or with garlic. Fresh and flexible, it is a fixture of any Sanya trip. Watch the scales and agree the cooking fee before you commit.
