Up by one cable car and down by another, covering Huangshan's classic loop: Shixin Peak, Beihai, Bright Summit and the Greeting Pine, with the cloud sea if luck allows — eight stops, each with the Chinese you will actually use there.
The recommended plan is “One Day on Huangshan — Cloud Seas and Ancient Pines”: about A full day · about 12 hours, 8 stops —Tangkou · Interchange Centre, Yungu Temple · Yungu Cable Car, Shixin Peak, Beihai · Brush Pen Blooming, Bright Summit, On-Mountain Lunch · Huizhou Food, Greeting Pine · Yuping Tower, Tunxi Old Street. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
Huangshan, in southern Anhui, is famous for its 'four wonders' — strange pines, odd rocks, cloud seas and hot springs — and is a World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site. The mountain is tall and the paths many, so covering it all in a day is unrealistic; instead walk the classic loop: from the Tangkou interchange take the park bus to Yungu Temple and the Yungu cable car up to Bai'e Ridge, climb Shixin Peak first, then Beihai and the 'Brush Pen Blooming' rock, lunch around Bright Summit with its four-way views, then by way of Tianhai and Aoyu Peak to Yuping Tower for the Greeting Pine, down by the Yuping cable car, and a Huizhou meal on Tunxi Old Street to finish. Mountain weather changes fast, so a raincoat, non-slip shoes and enough water matter more than anything; to see the cloud sea, stay overnight up top and rise early. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.
Best time · 最佳季节:四月到十一月最好,春秋最舒服;冬天能看雪松和雾凇,但要防滑;夏天多雷雨April to November is best, spring and autumn the most pleasant; winter brings snow-laden pines and rime but needs care on ice; summer is stormy

The gateway to the mountain — private cars stop here; park buses take you up.
Tangkou is the southern gateway to the scenic area, and everyone takes the park bus up from the interchange here. Private cars and ride-hailing cannot drive onto the mountain — you must transfer. Tickets and cable-car fares are sold here, along with luggage storage, raincoats and trekking poles; everything up top is expensive, so buy water, snacks and a raincoat here. Queues are long in season, so come early.
Practical note · 实用提示
买好门票和索道票;雨衣、水、巧克力在这里买齐;行李可以寄存,轻装上山。
Buy your tickets and cable fares; stock up on raincoat, water and chocolate; leave luggage here and climb light.
Yungu Temple is the entrance on the rear mountain, and the Yungu cable car runs from here up to Bai'e Ridge. The ride lasts about ten minutes, past valleys, strange rocks and drifting cloud, and on a clear day layered peaks in the distance. The car ends at Bai'e Ridge, where the real walking begins. Queues are long in season, so arriving early saves time.

'Only here do you believe Huangshan is a wonder' — the peak that makes you a believer.
Shixin Peak is not high, but its views are superb and it is a classic place to see Huangshan's pines and rocks. Named pines — Jieyin, Black Tiger, Lianli — cling to the cliff edge, each a different shape; opposite are the strange rocks of Shisun Peak, the picture shifting as cloud comes and goes. A late-Qing visitor, arriving here, exclaimed that only now did he believe Huangshan was a wonder of the world — hence the name.

Beihai is the heart of the mountain, and the 'Brush Pen Blooming' rock its star.
Beihai is the centre of Huangshan, with Sanhua Dock, Lion Peak and Qingliang Terrace all around it. The best known sight is 'Brush Pen Blooming': a stone pillar topped by a pine, like an inked brush in flower standing in the cloud. Beihai is also excellent for the cloud sea and the sunrise, and most of the mountain hotels cluster here — where many people spend the night.
Practical note · 实用提示
梦笔生花在散花坞观景台看最好;这里人多,慢慢等空当拍照。
View the brush rock from the Sanhua Dock platform; it is busy, so wait for a gap to shoot.
Bright Summit stands at 1,840 metres, Huangshan's second-highest peak and the divide between the front and rear mountains. Its top is a broad, open platform with nothing blocking the view; Tiandu Peak and Lotus Peak are close by, and on a lucky day the cloud sea spreads out below your feet. It is one of the classic spots for sunrise and sunset, and many stay nearby to catch the morning cloud sea.

Eating up top is dear but filling — or your own supplies will do.
There are only a few restaurants and hotels up top, prices are high and service slow — a meal to fill the tank: bamboo-shoot braised pork, stone-ear egg, and the Huizhou 'stinky mandarin fish' are on offer, but clearly dearer than below. Many bring bread, eggs, nuts and chocolate, sit down with hot water to refuel, and walk on. The real Huizhou meal of the day is down on Tunxi.

Huangshan's emblem — the thousand-year pine stretching one arm out from the cliff.
The Greeting Pine grows in front of Yuping Tower and is over a thousand years old; two great branches reach out and back like a host opening his arms to guests — the most famous pine on Huangshan, and the one in so many Huizhou paintings. The Yuping area is wide open, with Tiandu Peak, the steepest, and Lotus Peak, the highest, just beside it. It is the busiest spot on the mountain, and queueing for photos is normal.
Practical note · 实用提示
拍照要排队,耐心等;附近地方窄,看好脚下。
Expect a queue for photos; the area is narrow, so mind your footing.
Back down in the city, Tunxi Old Street is the ideal finish: a pedestrian street on a Song-dynasty plan, lined with Huizhou-style buildings selling ink sticks, She inkstones, brushes, Huangshan cakes and tea. Find a Huizhou restaurant and order fermented mandarin fish, hairy tofu and braised pork with bamboo shoots, with a pot of Huangshan Maofeng or Keemun tea. A small museum of old Huizhou objects is on the street too — a rewarding loop.
