Wuyishan is a range of red sandstone hills wrapped by the Nine-Bend Stream, whose banks grow the rock tea of Da Hong Pao fame. A day takes in a bamboo raft down the stream, a climb up Tianyou Peak for the panorama, the 'rock bone, flower fragrance' tea trail, a tea banquet at noon and a night show to finish.
The recommended plan is “One Day in Wuyishan — Nine-Bend Stream and Rock Tea”: about A full day · about 12 hours, 8 stops —Nine-Bend Stream · Bamboo Raft, Wuyi Palace · Song Street, Wuyi Tea Banquet · Langgu Smoked Goose, Tianyou Peak, Rock-Tea Trail · Da Hong Pao Mother Trees, Yixiantian · Huxiao Rock, Rock-Tea Tasting · Tea Expo Garden, Impression Da Hong Pao. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
Wuyishan, in northern Fujian, is a classic red-sandstone landscape and a World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site: crimson gravel peaks rise and fall, and the Nine-Bend Stream winds nine times between them. It is both a famous scenic mountain and the heartland of Chinese rock tea (oolong) — Da Hong Pao comes from its cliff faces. A sensible day: a bamboo raft down the Nine-Bend Stream in the morning to see the peaks from the water; ashore at noon for the Wuyi Palace and Song Street and a tea banquet; an afternoon climb of Tianyou Peak for the full view of the stream, then the 'rock bone, flower fragrance' trail to the mother Da Hong Pao trees and the scent of tea along the way; Yixiantian and Huxiao Rock toward evening, and the night show to finish. Summer is hot and humid, winter damp and cold, so prepare for both sun and rain. The local speech is Northern Min; Mandarin is understood. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.

武夷山的开场大戏:两个艄公撑一支竹筏,带你从水上把九曲溪的峰林看一遍。
The opening act: two boatmen on a bamboo raft take you down the stream past the full gallery of peaks.
The Nine-Bend Stream loops nine times around the hills from west to east, and the bamboo raft is the classic way to see it: six to a raft, a boatman fore and aft poling, floating downstream for about an hour and a half past the red-sandstone peaks — Jade Girl, Great King, Shaibu Rock — with the boatman telling the shapes and legends as you go. In the shallows you see the stones on the riverbed, the hills mirrored in the water: the finest view in Wuyishan. Raft tickets are tight in season, so book ahead.
Practical note · 实用提示

The end of the raft ride — a Song-style street of tea and local produce, a good place to rest.
Wuyi Palace sits near the end of the raft ride, an old Wuyishan sight with the Zhu Xi memorial and Wannian Palace, marking the years the neo-Confucian scholar Zhu Xi taught here. In front, Song Street is a commercial lane in Song style, lined with tea houses, local-produce shops and snack stalls — sit down for a cup of freshly brewed Da Hong Pao. It is also a hub of the scenic area: Tianyou Peak and Yixiantian are reached from nearby.

Cooking with tea is the local speciality — tea-scented chicken and smoked pork, with smoked goose and rice-field fish.
Wuyishan lives by tea, and the food is no different: tea-smoked pork, tea-scented chicken, vegetables fried in tea oil — lightly fragrant, not bitter. Langgu smoked goose is the local signature, rice-smoked with crisp skin and tender meat; rice-field carp, raised in the paddies, makes a fresh soup in mountain water. There are bamboo shoots (plenty of them here), wild mushrooms and smoked duck. The flavour is savoury, not hot — perfect with a pot of Wuyi rock tea. The resort area has many restaurants; ask prices first.

At the top, around Tianyou Pavilion, an open platform looks down on a great bend of the Nine-Bend Stream, rafts drifting through one by one between layered red cliffs: the classic Wuyishan image. It is cool and a little damp inside, and fun to squeeze through. Beside it, Huxiao Rock has a cliff shrine set into a cave and a steep stretch called Haohan Slope.

Sit down to a proper Wuyi rock tea — Rougui, Shuixian, Da Hong Pao — and hear what 'rock rhyme' means.
Wuyi rock tea is prized for 'rock bone, flower fragrance': grown in the weathered soil of the red cliffs, its liquor has a depth called 'rock rhyme'. In the resort area's tea expo garden and tea rooms you can sit and drink it course by course — Rougui is spicy-fragrant, Shuixian mellow, Da Hong Pao a balanced blend — while the tea master explains how to smell the aroma, read the colour and taste the returning sweetness. It is a good place to buy tea too, but remember: taste before you buy. Local tea grades from true-rock to half-rock to outer-hill, and the prices differ greatly — do not go by the sales pitch alone.
