Wuyuan is a cluster of Huizhou villages in north-east Jiangxi, famous for spring rapeseed and autumn drying racks. A day links the classic villages — Huangling, Jiangling, Likeng — with local food like braised tofu and steamed cakes: white walls and grey tiles against the fields.
The recommended plan is “One Day in Wuyuan — Rapeseed Blossom and Hui Villages”: about A full day · about 12 hours, 8 stops —Huangling, Jiangling, Likeng, Wuyuan Snacks · Braised Tofu, Jiangwan, Rainbow Bridge, Moon Bay, Wuyuan Town by Night. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
Wuyuan, in Shangrao, Jiangxi, belonged to Huizhou in the past, and its villages are all in the Huizhou style — white walls, grey tiles, stepped horse-head gables — villages of old lanes and ancestral halls scattered among fields and hills. In March the rapeseed blooms and the terraces of Jiangling and Huangling turn gold, a sight known across the country; in autumn households at Huangling lay chillies, corn and pumpkin on bamboo trays to dry — 'shaiqiu', the drying of the harvest — in colours that photograph beautifully. The villages are spread around the county town and you move by scenic shuttle or hired car, so three or four highlights in a day is sensible; to see them all takes two or three. Morning at Huangling for the drying racks (or Jiangling in blossom season), Huizhou farmhouse food at noon, Likeng and Jiangwan in the afternoon, and the river bend at Moon Bay to finish. The local speech is Hui dialect; Mandarin is understood, and older people will slow down for you. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.
Best time · 最佳季节:三月中到四月初看油菜花最盛;秋天(十月到十一月)看篁岭晒秋和红枫;夏天多雨、冬天清冷人少Mid-March to early April for the rapeseed bloom; October to November for the drying racks and maples at Huangling; summer is rainy and winter quiet and cold
时间、票价与开放时间会随季节变动,出发前请现场再确认一次;这里给的是先后顺序,不是时刻表。Times, prices and opening hours change by season — confirm on the day. The order here is a sequence, not a timetable.

A village clinging to a hillside — drying racks in autumn, terraced blossom in spring, Wuyuan's headline sight.
Huangling is a small Huizhou village built up a hillside, its houses stacked tier on tier, each doorway reaching out bamboo poles to dry chillies, corn, pumpkin and chrysanthemum — a blaze of red and yellow in autumn called 'shaiqiu'. Something is dried year-round, but autumn is richest. A cable car runs up (or you can walk), and inside are the Sky Street, the Lei Xin glass bridge and old halls. In spring the terraced rapeseed below is spectacular too. It is busy in season, so arriving early dodges the tour groups.

The most famous rapeseed viewpoint — terraces cascading from ridge to valley, dotted with white-walled houses.
Jiangling is the top rapeseed spot in Wuyuan, in bloom from mid-March to early April. From the viewpoint at the ridge you look down over gold pouring down the terraces in tiers, white-walled villages in the middle and layered hills beyond — the image many have of 'the most beautiful countryside in China'. In blossom season there are shuttles, and viewpoints at ridge, slope and foot, the higher the wider. Out of season it is just ordinary terraced hills, not worth a special trip.
Practical note · 实用提示
花期人多车多,尽量早到;山顶风大,带件外套;花田别踩进去。
Blossom season brings crowds and traffic — come early; the ridge is windy, bring a jacket; keep out of the flower fields.
Likeng is one of Wuyuan's earliest-developed and best-known old villages: a stream runs through the middle, with white-walled dark-tiled houses, flagstone paths, little bridges and oared bamboo rafts on either side. There are old officials' houses, the Shenming Pavilion and an old stage, and the lanes wind about. It is fairly commercial, with shops and farmhouse kitchens along the street — come here for convenience and life; the quietest hours are early morning and dusk.

在村里吃徽州农家菜,约一小时。A Huizhou farmhouse lunch in the village, about an hour.
Wuyuan cooking belongs to the Huizhou school — rich, dark, savoury, using local mountain produce. Braised tofu is the signature: tofu, mushrooms, minced pork and bamboo shoots thickened into a warm stew that goes straight over rice; steamed dishes wrap vegetables and meat in rice flour; and qigao is a rice-batter cake, soft with a faint wine fragrance. Red carp and Wuyuan green tea are local too. Farmhouse meals are modestly priced with big portions, so order with care.
Practical note · 实用提示
徽菜偏咸偏油,人少别点太多;汽糕趁热吃最香。
Huizhou dishes are salty and rich — do not over-order; the steamed cake is best hot.
Jiangwan is one of Wuyuan's old villages, with the Xiao Jiang ancestral hall and old gateways at its entrance and a main street threading old houses, shops and arches. It is a good place to see Huizhou's 'three carvings' — brick, stone and wood — gathered together, with patterns on eaves, door-houses and window lattices. People still live here, and you wander into their lanes as you go, full of everyday life. Quieter than Likeng, it rewards a slow look at the architecture.

Rainbow Bridge, in Qinghua town, is a covered bridge built in the Southern Song — over eight hundred years old, named for its shape like a rainbow lying on the water. It is timber, with a gallery and pavilions above to shelter from weather, and an old waterwheel still turning slowly below. The river is clear, green hills behind, and visitors are few: one of Wuyuan's rare quiet, handsome spots, good for long-exposure water shots.
