The Mawangdui finds at the museum, a thousand-year academy below Yuelu Mountain, a properly hot lunch across the river, and lights on the Xiang after dark — eight stops, each with the Chinese you will actually use there.
The recommended plan is “One Day in Changsha — Hunan Food and Yuelu Mountain”: about A full day · about 11 hours, 8 stops —Hunan Museum (Mawangdui), Yuelu Academy, Yuelu Mountain · Aiwan Pavilion, Orange Isle, Changsha Snacks, Taiping Street, Wuyi Square, Du Fu Pavilion · Xiang River at Night. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
The day splits in two. The morning is west of the river in Yuelu: the Mawangdui relics at the Hunan Museum, then the thousand-year Yuelu Academy and the mountain above it. Cross via Orange Isle at midday to the old town east of the river (Tianxin) for a Changsha snack lunch, then Taiping Street and Wuyi Square in the afternoon, and Du Fu Pavilion on the east bank of the Xiang to finish after dark. Changsha's chilli is famous nationwide, and 微辣 here is often hotter than 中辣 elsewhere — order a level down. The local speech is Changsha dialect (Xiang), but Mandarin works; it comes fast, with sentence-final particles like 咯 and 咧 everywhere. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.
March–May and September–November are best; summer is muggy and winter damp-cold, and autumn turns Yuelu's leaves
Times, prices and opening hours change by season — confirm on the day. The order here is a sequence, not a timetable.

Everything from the Mawangdui Han tomb — including its two-thousand-year-old occupant.
The Hunan Museum's fame rests on Mawangdui: a Western Han tomb excavated east of Changsha in 1972 that yielded silk paintings, a gauze garment, lacquerware and quantities of bamboo slips. The body of Lady Xin Zhui is remarkably preserved — skin texture is still visible. The gauze robe, lighter than a single liang and sheer as mist, is the museum's prize. Entry is free but needs booking, and it usually closes Mondays.

Free but booked in advance, closed Mondays. Go to the Mawangdui galleries first, right at opening.
Founded in the Northern Song and one of the four great academies of old China, Yuelu still teaches: it is now part of Hunan University. The great lecture hall, the imperial library and the long stele corridors along both sides keep their original layout, and the couplet 'Chu alone has talent, and here it flourishes' is the best known. Ancient trees stand front and back; inside is markedly cooler in summer and quiet for a mountain site.

A red-pillared pavilion on the hillside, ringed by autumn leaves.
The pavilion sits halfway up and dates from the Qing; its name comes from a line of poetry about stopping the carriage to enjoy the evening maples. Maples surround it, and in late autumn the whole slope turns red — the city's best-known spot for autumn colour. The hill is not tall: twenty minutes at an easy pace from the academy, with old trees the whole way. A stream runs beside the pavilion, cool in summer.

A long island in the Xiang, with a huge statue of a young man at its head.
Orange Isle is a long island in the middle of the Xiang, several kilometres from end to end, with a giant statue of a young figure at its southern tip — a Changsha landmark. There are lawns, orange trees and a little sightseeing train; walking the whole island takes over an hour, so take the shuttle if time is short. Fireworks are held some evenings — an unexpected bonus if you happen to catch them.
Practical note ·
The isle is long — the shuttle saves effort. The tip is crowded and photos need queuing.
Changsha's snacks are built on chilli: stinky tofu fried crisp outside and soft within, dressed with chilli sauce and garlic water; 口味虾, crayfish in a numbing-hot sauce, eaten by the basinful on summer nights; plus sugar-oil rice cakes, rice noodles and fish head with chopped chilli. Heat can be adjusted, but 微辣 here beats most places — start at the lowest level and order a cold mung-bean or sour-plum drink alongside.

Start at the mildest level and add later. Crayfish are sold by weight — ask the price first.
Taiping Street is one of the better-preserved lanes in the old town — a narrow flagstone way between grey-tiled houses, with the former residence of the Han scholar Jia Yi tucked inside. Snack stalls, teahouses, design shops and souvenir stores sit along it, and it is an easy stroll. Turn into a side lane and you see ordinary Changsha life continuing.

Stalls take QR payment — keep your phone ready. The main lane is busy; side lanes are quieter.
Wuyi Square is the commercial centre, ringed by malls, small shops and milk-tea bars; 'see you at Wuyi Square' is the local default. An underground shopping street links several metro entrances, so you can walk below ground when it is hot or raining. For shopping, a drink or a rest, this is the handiest area.
