Russian-era buildings along Central Street in the morning, an iron-pot stew at noon, across the river to Old Daowai and Sun Island in the afternoon, and Ice and Snow World after dark — eight stops, each with the Chinese you will actually use there.
The recommended plan is “One Day in Harbin — Ice, Snow and Old Architecture”: about A full day · about 11 hours, 8 stops —Central Street, St Sophia Cathedral, Songhua River · Flood Control Monument, Northeastern Cooking, Old Daowai · Chinese Baroque, Sun Island Scenic Area, Harbin Grand Theatre, Ice and Snow World. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
The day stays on the two banks of the Songhua. The morning walks Central Street in Daoli — St Sophia, then the Flood Control Monument by the river; at noon cross to Daowai for northeastern food and the Chinese-Baroque old block; the afternoon goes to Sun Island in Songbei, with the Harbin Grand Theatre on the way; and after dark it ends at Ice and Snow World, the one unmissable stop of a Harbin winter. Winters here are brutal — minus twenty or thirty is normal — so you need a down coat, thick boots, hat and gloves, and if you wear glasses, expect fogging. Northeastern portions are enormous; two people ordering two dishes often cannot finish them. The local speech is Northeastern Mandarin, close to standard, fast, with a heavy 儿 ending. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.

一条铺着方石的百年老街,两边全是俄式老楼。
A century-old street of small paving stones, lined with Russian-era buildings.
Central Street is Harbin's oldest shopping street, paved with small stone blocks said to have cost a silver dollar each in the old days. The buildings on both sides are mostly Russian and European from the early twentieth century — domes, reliefs, coloured glass — and walking it feels like stepping into an old photograph. There are old Western restaurants and ice-cream stands; eating an ice lolly in the freezing wind is a local ritual.

A cathedral with green onion domes — now a museum of architecture.
Built in 1907 and among the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the Far East, its signature is the great green onion dome with smaller tent roofs around it. The interior is now a museum of architecture, showing photographs and models of old Harbin. Pigeons gather on the square, and in winter snow on the red brick is a fine sight — one of the city's most photographed spots.
Practical note · 实用提示
进教堂参观要买票,广场免费;雪后拍照最好,人多要排队。
The interior charges a fee; the square is free. Snow makes the best photos, and queues form.
The monument stands on the Songhua, commemorating the great flood of 1957, with a ring of figures in relief around it. The river is right behind: in summer boats cross, in winter the ice is thick enough for skating, ice sleds and spinning tops. Sun Island lies on the far bank, and the open river view is wide.

冬天江面结冰但别乱走,认准官方划出的活动区;江风很冷,多穿一层。
The ice is thick in winter but stay inside the marked areas. The river wind bites — add a layer.
Northeastern food is generous and plain: guo bao rou — sweet-and-sour pork, crisp outside, the city's signature; iron-pot stew with a big pan on the table, fish or ribs with corn cakes, steaming; plus pickled cabbage with pork, three-earth vegetables and pork dishes. By southern standards one dish feeds two — two people usually need only two or three orders, with rice or corn alongside.

量很大,先点两三个,不够再加;铁锅炖要提前订或等锅,别赶时间。
Portions are huge — order two or three and add later. Iron-pot stew needs booking or waiting, so do not rush it.
Old Daowai is Harbin's earliest quarter, and its 'Chinese Baroque' buildings are the attraction: European arched windows and ornamental carving on the street facade, traditional Chinese courtyards behind. Restoration is ongoing, and old lanes, shopfronts and everyday life remain — quieter and far more real than Central Street.

A big park on the north bank — winter brings a snow sculpture festival.
Sun Island occupies the north bank of the Songhua — a large park and wetland. In summer it is leafy and cool, good for cycling and boats; in winter it hosts the snow sculpture festival, with rows of huge snow carvings, white and luminous, quite different from the ice lanterns. Smaller gardens with deer and squirrels sit inside; a circuit takes an hour or two.

The Harbin Grand Theatre stands on wetland in Songbei, its white curved surfaces folded outward like snow drifts shaped by wind — a recent addition to the city's landmarks. Castles and slides built entirely of ice — lit at night, it is another world.
Ice and Snow World is Harbin's best-known winter attraction: castles, towers and long slides built from Songhua ice. By day it is clear ice; at night the lighting turns the whole site to colour. There are ice slides, carving exhibitions and shows, and although it is desperately cold, many stay three or four hours. It usually opens from late December to late February, depending on the year's temperatures.
