An early ferry to Gulangyu, Sunlight Rock, back to the old streets for a bowl of satay noodles, an afternoon of cycling along the coast, and a fishing-village night market — eight stops, each with the Chinese you will actually use there.
The recommended plan is “One Day in Xiamen — Island and Old Streets”: about A full day · about 12 hours, 8 stops —Gulangyu (Ferry), Sunlight Rock, Longtou Road Snacks, Zhongshan Road, South Putuo Temple, Shapowei, Island Ring Road, Zengcuoan. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
This route splits Xiamen into the island and the main island. Take an early ferry to Gulangyu, climb Sunlight Rock for the view, snack your way along Longtou Road, cross back for the arcaded old streets of Zhongshan Road, then South Putuo Temple and Shapowei in the afternoon, cycle the coast road at dusk and finish at the Zengcuoan night market. Gulangyu ferry tickets are real-name and capped in number, so book the earliest sailing — miss it and the whole day slips. The local speech is Hokkien (Xiamen dialect), quite different from Mandarin, but Mandarin works everywhere visitors go; in wet markets the older generation may only speak Hokkien, where writing things down or a phone translator is fastest. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.

A ten-minute crossing to an island with no cars — only lanes and piano music.
Gulangyu is a small island in Xiamen Bay. Once a shared foreign concession, it kept a whole district of villas from many countries, and because so many households kept pianos it is known as the 'Island of Pianos'. No vehicles — everything on foot, along narrow forking lanes where a turn brings you to another old villa or banyan. Access is by ferry, with real-name tickets and a daily cap, so book ahead in high season.
Practical note · 实用提示
船票实名、分时段,旺季提前几天订;岛上只能走,行李越少越好,穿舒服的鞋。
Tickets are real-name and time-slotted — book days ahead in peak season. Everything is on foot, so travel light and wear good shoes.
Sunlight Rock is the island's high point, a single granite mass in the middle of Gulangyu. The way up is narrow and steep, the last stretch almost hugging the rock face; from the top the island's red roofs, Xiamen's towers across the water and the ships offshore all lie below. Early morning — good light, few people — is the most pleasant time.
Practical note · 实用提示
登顶台阶陡,穿防滑的鞋;旺季排队上下,防晒和帽子上山前备好。
The final steps are steep — wear grippy shoes. In peak season expect queues both ways; bring sun cream and a hat.

The island's busiest street — fish balls, oyster omelette and satay noodles all the way along.
Longtou Road is Gulangyu's main street, lined with snack shops and souvenir stalls. The island's staples are fish-ball soup, oyster omelette, satay noodles and filled pastries — ideal for eating as you walk. The pastries, sweet or savoury, are a Xiamen speciality and make an easy gift. The street is narrow and packed at midday, so just follow the flow.

小吃摊多收扫码,备好手机;海鲜按份问价,先问再点。
Most stalls take QR payment — keep your phone ready. For seafood, ask the price per portion before ordering.
Zhongshan Road is Xiamen's oldest shopping street, lined with Southeast-Asian-style arcades: a covered walkway at street level for shade and rain, homes above. Old names, snack shops and seafood stores sit together, and it looks best after dark when the lights come on. Step into the side lanes and you are in the quiet old town, far from the main street's bustle.

主街人多,想看老厦门就往横巷里走;海产干货按斤称,先问价。
The main street is crowded; the side lanes show the real old town. Dried seafood is sold by weight — ask the price first.
South Putuo Temple sits beside Xiamen University, backed by the Five Old Men Peaks, and is one of the busiest temples in southern Fujian. Entry is free, the halls climb the hillside and trails continue upward behind them. Its vegetarian meals and pastries are well known, and many come just to eat. The gate adjoins Xiamen University, but campus visits need advance booking and numbers are limited — if you miss out, the temple and its gateway view are enough.

An old typhoon harbour turned creative quarter — fishing boats beside coffee shops.
Shapowei was once Xiamen harbour's typhoon shelter, where boats settle onto the mud at low tide. In recent years the old buildings became small shops, studios and cafés, drawing a young crowd while keeping the fishing-port look: old boats, anchors, nets hung out to dry. Walk the waterfront at dusk — the light is best and it is at its quietest.

A coastal road — cycle it and the beach stays with you the whole way.
The Island Ring Road runs along Xiamen's southeast coast; its finest stretch lies between Zengcuoan and Huangcuo, beach and open sea on one side, lawns and a running track on the other. Rent a bike or use a shared one and take it slowly — there are viewpoints and beach entrances along the way for stopping and paddling. Riding toward sunset is the best of it.
Practical note · 实用提示
共享单车好借好还;海边风大,帽子和轻的东西拿好,注意来车。
Shared bikes are easy to find and return; the sea wind is strong, so hold onto hats and loose items and watch for traffic.
Zengcuoan was a small fishing village that became Xiamen's 'creative village': narrow lanes full of guesthouses, snack stalls and small shops, at their liveliest when the lights come on. Seafood, satay noodles, herbal jelly and tropical fruit are all here, and prices are more sensible than on Gulangyu. The lanes are narrow and winding — following the crowd works fine.
