外滩The Bund
Wàitān
A row of old riverside buildings facing the towers of Lujiazui across the water.
The Bund is a riverside promenade on the west bank of the Huangpu: on one side, the 1920s and 30s buildings of a dozen architectural styles; on the other, Lujiazui across the water. Early morning is best — people jog, practise tai chi and fly kites, and the light is ideal for photos. The promenade runs a little over a kilometre; twenty minutes end to end, or an hour at an easy pace.

It is windy on the water — cooler than the city morning and night, so bring a jacket, and mind your belongings where the railing gets crowded.
