Langmusi straddles the border of Gansu and Sichuan: a small river divides the town in two, one half Gansu, one half Sichuan, each with its own monastery facing the other across the water. The day starts at the white stupa and the kora path, takes in the Gansu side — Serti Monastery and the sky-burial site, viewed from afar and never approached — breaks for a Tibetan lunch in town, crosses the river in the afternoon for Kirti Monastery, walks into Nammo Gorge to find the source of the Bailong River, and ends with sunset over the grassland beyond town.
The recommended plan is “One Day in Langmusi — A Small Town and the Source of the Bailong River”: about A full day · about 10 hours, 8 stops —The White Stupa · the Kora Path, Serti Monastery · the Gansu Side, The Sky-Burial Site · from a Distance, Town · A Tibetan Lunch, Kirti Monastery · the Sichuan Side, Nammo Gorge · Source of the Bailong River, The Grassland Beyond Town · Sunset, Dinner in Town · by the Stove. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
Langmusi is the name of a place, not a monastery: a small town in Luqu County, Gannan, Gansu, at about 3,300 metres. Its oddity is where it stands. The Bailong River runs through it, narrow enough to step across, and it is the boundary between Gansu and Sichuan — Gansu on one bank, Sichuan on the other, hence the local boast of standing in two provinces at once. Each side has a Gelug monastery: Serti on the Gansu bank, Kirti on the Sichuan bank, both centuries old, watching each other across the water. Behind the town a gorge, Nammo, runs into the hills, and a short way in you come to the source of the Bailong — springs welling out of the rock. Langmusi has appeared in foreign guidebooks for decades as 'Little Switzerland of the East', for the round grassy hills and fir woods around it do look the part. Time moves slowly here: yaks graze the slope at the edge of town and old people circle the white stupa, turning the kora.
Best time · 最佳季节:六月到十月最好;七八月草原最绿、野花多,九月底十月初秋色金黄;正月有藏历新年和晒佛活动(人多、冷);冬天雪大,部分路和寺内活动减少June to October is best; July and August for the greenest grassland and most wildflowers, late September into October for golden autumn; the first lunar month brings Tibetan New Year and the thangka-display rites (crowded and cold); winter snows cut some roads and reduce temple activity

The white stupa and prayer-wheel corridor at the middle of town, where old people circle at dawn — join a lap.
Langmusi is small — the main street walks in ten minutes — with a white stupa at its centre beside a long rank of prayer wheels. Dawn is kora time, and old people and herders from around circle the stupa lap after lap, turning the wheels with their right hands and murmuring prayers. Visitors may join — but mind the direction: clockwise, never against it. The kora path is free. Small shops sell butter, khata scarves and Tibetan incense. At 3,300 metres, newcomers should walk slowly, drink water and not rush to shower.

The Gelug monastery on the slope on this bank, golden roofs and white walls stacked upwards.
Serti, on the Gansu side, is reached by walking up the slope from town. The monastery climbs the hillside in tiers of white and ochre walls with golden roofs; a kora path circles it, and in the mornings monks can be seen debating — clapping as they question and answer, the way Tibetan Buddhism is studied. Inside the halls: walk clockwise, remove your hat, keep quiet, do not photograph unless told you may, and never step on the door sills. Butter sculptures and scriptures laid out to dry are not to be touched. At this altitude, take the climb slowly.

The most solemn of Tibetan burial sites — to be watched only from far off, never approached, never photographed.
Sky burial is a Tibetan rite in which the body of the dead is offered to vultures — a final act of giving. There is such a site on the hill behind Langmusi. The rules are strict: you may look at the landscape from a distance, but you must never approach, never photograph, never make noise and never gather to watch. This respects the dead and their families, and it is what locals ask of every visitor. If you happen upon a rite in progress, quietly turn and go. Treat this stretch as learning about a culture, not as a 'sight'.

A small restaurant on the main street — Tibetan buns, yak beef, yogurt, and the town's famous apple pie.
Eating in Langmusi is a curious mix of Tibetan and Western. The local table has Tibetan meat buns, yak beef fried or grilled, butter tea, tsampa and thick yogurt sprinkled with sugar. Because foreigners came early, the town also grew Western cafés, and the black apple pie and yak burger are now 'Langmusi specialties'. Order Tibetan for the local taste, Western for a change — either is fine. Lunch gets busy, so go early for a table.

Cross the river to the Sichuan bank and you are at Kirti, larger than Serti, its stupas, halls and monks' quarters running together; the relic stupa of the fifth Kirti Rinpoche is a famous sacred object. Debates and kora go on here too, with the same rules: clockwise, no photography inside the halls, no interrupting.

A short way into the gorge, clear water wells out of a rock crack — the source of the Bailong River.
Nammo Gorge opens beside Kirti Monastery: a narrow stone ravine, rock walls on either side, a shallow stream underfoot. Twenty minutes in you come to the source of the Bailong, water welling out of a crack in the rock and gathering into a clear run — hard to believe such a trickle becomes the river that crosses Gansu and Sichuan. The gorge is cool and damp, the stones slick, and in places you step from rock to rock across the water. Prayer flags and mani piles left by the faithful stand along it — do not touch. Longer trails go deeper, but most turn back at the source.

Highland nights are cold — into a small restaurant for a pot of yak beef and tea, eaten slowly.
Nights in Langmusi are cold; even in summer you need a jacket. Dinner is usually in a small restaurant: yak hotpot with thick meat and rich broth, Tibetan dough-drop soup, beef with potatoes, barley cakes, and a pot of sweet tea — gentler than butter tea and easier on most palates. Some places have a stove with guests sitting round it, warm and sociable. Eat early and sleep: at 3,300 metres a good night is what keeps you comfortable.
