Xiaoqikong lies by the Zhang River in Qiannan, Guizhou — the most famous stretch of jade-green water in China's karst country: an emerald river running through a valley, strung with a two-hundred-year-old bridge, a chain of tiered falls, a forest you walk across on stepping stones, and a dark green pool. The day follows the reserve in order: the old Xiaoqikong bridge, Laya Falls, the Sixty-Eight-Tier Falls, the Forest on the Rocks, the Forest in the Water, Cuigu Falls and Wolong Pool, closing with a boat or a drift down the river.
The recommended plan is “One Day at Xiaoqikong — Green Water and a Forest in the River”: about A full day · about 9 hours, 9 stops —The Main Gate · Arrival and Breakfast, The Old Xiaoqikong Bridge, Laya Falls, The Sixty-Eight-Tier Falls, The Forest on the Rocks · Lunch, The Forest in the Water · Crossing on Stones, Cuigu Falls, Wolong Pool · Boat or Drift, Libo County Town · Dinner. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
Libo County lies in Qiannan, Guizhou, home to Bouyei and Yao communities and part of the South China Karst world heritage site. Xiaoqikong scenic area lies south of the county town and takes its name from the seven-arched bridge built in the Qing dynasty — a modest bridge, but set among green water and trees it has become the reserve's emblem. The water's colour is the real oddity here: the bed is limestone and the water carries fine calcium carbonate, so that under the light it turns jade-green, peacock-blue, positively luminous on a clear day. The whole route is one water scene after another: Laya Falls, the Sixty-Eight-Tier Falls (a stair of water ledges), the Forest on the Rocks (trees growing out of stone), the Forest in the Water (trees growing in the river, which you cross on stepping stones among them), and Wolong Pool, a green so deep it goes dark. Shuttles link the stops, but there is a good deal of walking — sandals you can get wet are the practical choice. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.
Best time · 最佳季节:四月到十月最好;四到六月水量渐大、颜色最碧,七八月水最旺但也是雨季,注意暴雨;秋天水清人少;冬天水少但安静,仍可玩April to October is best; April to June brings the water up and its colour at its most jade-green, July and August the fullest flow but also the rains and sudden downpours; autumn is clear and quiet, winter low and still — still walkable

A Libo-style bowl of rice noodles at the gate, then tickets and in.
Xiaoqikong is about half an hour from Libo county town. Buy admission and the shuttle ticket on entry: the reserve is a single line from east gate to west gate, and you can start from either end, the shuttle stopping at each point between. Breakfast at the gate or in town: Libo sour-soup noodles, rice noodles, glutinous rice, beef noodles — sour soup is the Guizhou signature, tart and appetising. Today means water, so wear quick-drying clothes and sandals or river shoes, with a spare set left in the car.

Either gate works — check the direction before buying; wear river shoes and bring spare clothes; watch for storm warnings in the rains.
The reserve takes its name from this bridge, built in the Daoguang reign of the Qing, seven arches of stone, not large but perfectly placed: bright green water below, dense trees on both banks, the parapet overgrown with vines and ferns as if the bridge grew out of the river. There is a queue for photographs; come early to get it empty. The water beneath is shallow and hot days bring bathers to the edge. A few steps upstream lies Laya Falls. This is the classic shot — do not miss it.

Come early or late for an empty bridge; the deck is slick — walk carefully; keep out of the deep water.
Laya Falls drops straight down beside the path, landing close to the walkway so that anyone passing gets a faceful of spray — a welcome coolness in summer. Its volume follows the season, fullest after rain. A stretch of boardwalk runs hard against the fall, wet and slick; hold the rail. Photographers get their 'person beside the water curtain' shot here. If you would rather stay dry, take the small path around.

One river stepping down in sixty-eight ledges, white water at every tier — a ribbon of silver.
This is one of the loveliest stretches on the river: the water stepping down over ledge upon ledge of rock, each tier a small fall, sixty-eight of them from top to bottom, which gives the name. The water is green, the falls turn it white, green and white alternating the whole way down — follow the boardwalk and you are walking beside a staircase of water. The boardwalk follows the river on a gentle gradient; an hour or more with stops. In the permitted spots you can step in; the water is very cold.

Trees growing out of cracks in the rock, roots gripping the stone — and lunch nearby.
The Forest on the Rocks is a strange stand: the trees grow not in soil but on bare rock, roots drilling down the cracks and gripping the stone while the crowns rise tall and dense. This is what karst does — the soil is thin, so the trees hold on to the rock to live. Kiosks along the way sell glutinous rice, grilled sausages, instant noodles, corn; lunch is inside the reserve, so do not expect a feast. Mosquitoes are plentiful in summer — bring repellent.

Trees standing in the river, and you crossing stone to stone among them.
The Forest in the Water is the day's signature experience: rows of trees standing in the riverbed, the stream running between their roots, and you crossing from stone to stone among the trunks with the water underfoot — a few steps and the name explains itself. Some stones sit a fair distance apart, so watch your feet and do not jump; shoes should be grippy and able to get wet — sandals are best. The water comes to mid-calf, and in summer this is the most comfortable walking of the day; just do not slip or tread in the gaps. When it is busy, queue and cross slowly.

A broad sheet of water laid over the rock face — a white skirt hung on the hillside.
Cuigu is not a spout of water like other falls but a whole sheet laid down a broad rock face — wide, gentle in gradient, hanging white and shaped like a skirt, which earns it the nickname 'the White Skirt'. The sound is not the boom of a single drop but a broad hiss of water. The boardwalk passes along its flank, close enough to walk beside it. When it is quiet, this is calmer than Laya — good for lingering and shooting slowly.

A pool so deep its green goes dark, its surface still as a slab of jade — take a boat out onto it.
Wolong Pool is where the river gathers into a deep basin, its water darker and deeper than anywhere else on the route, green shading almost to black, which gives it its air of secrecy. The surface lies still, the hills and trees around it reflected cleanly. You can take a boat out for a circuit, or a drift in season, seeing the banks again from the water. In the low evening light the colour is at its densest — the best time to photograph it. Then take the shuttle out of the reserve.

After a day in the water, back to town for sour-soup fish, pickles and Libo roast suckling pig.
Dinner in Libo town is Guizhou cooking: sour-soup fish (fish in a broth soured by fermented rice water or tomato — tart, hot and fresh, the provincial signature), pickled vegetables, Zhang River fish, Libo roast suckling pig (local small pigs roasted to crisp skin and fragrant meat), and Bouyei glutinous rice. Sour-soup fish is usually priced by weight — ask first. If you cannot take chilli, say 'less chilli' or 'no chilli' up front. Afterwards walk the town; the night market by the Zhang River is lively, and a bowl of ice jelly cuts the heat.
