A pot of tea and dim sum in old Xiguan, then along the arcades to the river, and after dark the tower, the boat and the new city — eight stops, each with the Chinese you will actually use there.
The recommended plan is “One Day in Guangzhou — Morning Tea and Arcade Streets”: about A full day · about 9 hours, 8 stops —Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Cantonese Morning Tea, Yongqingfang, Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street, Shamian Island, Canton Tower, Huacheng Square, Pearl River Night Cruise. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
The route follows Guangzhou's real geography: Lingnan architecture at the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall in Liwan, then a proper Cantonese morning tea, the arcade streets of Yongqingfang and Shangxiajiu at midday, over the river to Shamian Island in the afternoon, up the Canton Tower at dusk, the lights of the new city after dinner, and a night cruise on the Pearl River to finish. The old-town stops sit within walking distance of one another, and taxis or the metro handle the river crossings. Locals speak Cantonese day to day, but Mandarin works everywhere on this route — the words and sentences here are mainly Mandarin, with Cantonese noted where it matters. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.

一座雕满花纹的岭南祠堂,现在也是民间工艺博物馆。
A Lingnan ancestral hall covered in carving — now a folk-art museum.
Built in the Qing dynasty as a base for Chen-surname students and visitors to the provincial capital, its real treasure is the ornament: wood, brick and stone carving plus pottery and plaster figures layered over one compound, with a whole ridge of painted pottery scenes running along the roof. Today it is also the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, with Cantonese embroidery, porcelain and ivory carving on show.
Practical note · 实用提示
开门早,八点多人最少;屋脊的陶塑要抬头看,带个长焦或用手机放大拍。
It opens early and is quietest before nine. Look up at the roof ridge — a zoom lens or phone zoom helps.
The rule is 一盅两件 — one pot of tea and a couple of dim sum, enough to sit over all morning. Expect shrimp dumplings, pork siu mai, barbecue-pork buns, rice-noodle rolls, chicken feet and egg tarts, with pu'er or tieguanyin tea. There is a ritual first: rinse your bowls and chopsticks with hot water from the pot, tipping the water into the bowl on the table. When the pot runs dry, tilt the lid open and staff will refill it. The Cantonese bill is 埋单, in Mandarin 买单.
Practical note · 实用提示
忙的时段可能要拼桌,服务员问「几位」直接说人数就行;点心按笼算钱,点多少吃多少。
At busy times you may share a table — just give your party size when asked. Dim sum is priced per basket, so order as you eat.
On Enning Road, Yongqingfang is the best-known piece of Guangzhou's 'micro-renewal' of the old town: the buildings kept their structure, only facades, joinery and services were repaired, and the original neighbours are still in place. The lanes are narrow, lined with grey-brick houses and arcades, and a corner leads into the Cantonese Opera Art Museum, with its Lingnan-garden stage.
Practical note · 实用提示
巷子窄、有人住,说话放轻、别对着人家门口拍;博物馆周一常闭馆。
The lanes are narrow and lived-in — keep your voice down and do not photograph doorways. The museum usually closes Mondays.

A whole street of arcade shops, old names and street snacks mixed together.
One of Guangzhou's oldest shopping streets, its arcades run continuously — shops below, homes above, so you can walk it in the rain without an umbrella. Old names, fabric shops and snack stalls sit side by side, and dessert shops dominate: double-skin milk, turtle-shell jelly and black-sesame paste are childhood flavours here. It gets crowded; keep your bag in front of you.

中午人多,小吃摊收现金的少,准备好扫码付款。
It is busy at midday and most stalls prefer QR payment over cash.
Once a sandbank in the Pearl River and later a foreign concession, Shamian keeps a whole grid of European buildings — red brick, arched windows, little spires — under banyans too thick to hug. It is quiet inside, small enough to circle in under an hour, with benches along the water. Wedding photographers work here for a reason: in good light the whole street photographs well.

Standing on the south bank at six hundred metres, the tower narrows in the middle — hence the nickname 'Small Waist'. Inside are observation decks, a glass walkway and a rooftop Ferris wheel for the brave. Its lighting changes colour after dark and dominates the river at night. If you would rather not go up, the view from Huacheng Square across the water is arguably better.

Huacheng Square is the heart of Zhujiang New Town, ringed by the library, the opera house and the tallest office towers. After dark the facades light up together, the plaza is wide and full of evening walkers, and the Canton Tower stands directly opposite. There is a mall underneath — handy for dinner or shelter from rain.

The cruise runs a stretch of the river with the bridges, offices and the Canton Tower lighting up in sequence — from the water the whole city reads in layers. Boats leave from several piers and the trip runs about an hour; some include a buffet. If you want the open deck, board early to claim a spot, and bring a jacket for the wind.
