A monorail through a building and a park above two rivers in the morning, a bowl of noodles at noon, stone steps and a cable car in the afternoon, and cliff-side houses with a nine-grid hotpot after dark — eight stops, each with the Chinese you will actually use there.
The recommended plan is “One Day in Chongqing — Mountain City and Hotpot”: about A full day · about 11 hours, 8 stops —Liziba Monorail Station, Eling Park, Chongqing Noodles, Shibati Old Quarter, Jiefangbei, Yangtze River Cableway, Hongyadong, Chongqing Hotpot. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
The route stays on the Yuzhong peninsula and follows Chongqing's real slopes up and down: early at Liziba to watch a monorail emerge from a residential block, then Eling Park for the view where the Yangtze and Jialing meet, a bowl of Chongqing noodles at midday, the old stone steps of Shibati and the Jiefangbei shopping district, a ride across the river and back on the Yangtze cableway, the cliff-side houses of Hongyadong lit up after dark, and a nine-grid hotpot to finish. This is a mountain city: two points close on the map may be many steps apart, so each 'to the next stop' note says whether to walk, take the escalator or call a taxi. The local speech is Chongqing dialect (a Southwestern Mandarin), but standard Mandarin works everywhere — 要得 simply means 'fine, okay'. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.

A monorail running straight through a residential block — Chongqing's signature sight.
Liziba station sits by the Jialing River, where Line 2 of the monorail passes through the middle floors of an eight-storey residential block — people live above and below, the station is in the building. The image gave Chongqing its '8D city' reputation, and a viewing platform was built specifically to watch the trains. Building and station were designed together: the track cavity was left first, then homes built around it, so the trains barely disturb anyone.
Practical note ·
Wait on the viewing platform — trains come every few minutes, and mornings are quiet for photos.
Eling Park sits on the spine of the Yuzhong peninsula; its tallest structure, Kansheng Tower, looks out to where the Yangtze and Jialing meet near Chaotianmen, with bridges and towers layered across both banks. The park began as a Qing-dynasty merchant's private garden, so it is thickly planted — and there are plenty of steps before the tower, so take them slowly. On a clear day it is the easiest full view of the mountain city.
Practical note ·
Fog hides the view — check visibility first. The tower has a small fee and many steps.
Chongqing noodles are vegetarian by default — the flavour comes from a spoonful of chilli oil, Sichuan pepper and a dozen other seasonings at the bottom of the bowl. Common orders are pea-and-mince (豌杂面), beef, or pork-intestine noodles; you order by weight, 二两 or 三两, and adding a fried egg is 加蛋. You can ask for 微辣 (mild) or 不要辣 (no chilli), but the real thing is numbing-hot — start mild. Noodles are boiled to order in well under a minute.
Practical note ·

Old stone steps running downhill to the river, lined with restored houses.
Shibati is Chongqing's classic link between the upper and lower town: old city on the hill, wharf by the river, joined by flights of stone steps. The renewal kept the steps and grey-tiled houses, and the lanes now hold teahouses, corner shops and snacks. From the top you look straight down to the Yangtze. It is steps all the way — wear comfortable shoes.
Practical note ·
It is stone steps throughout — walk only part of it if your knees complain. The bottom reaches the river.
Originally a monument to the war of resistance and later renamed the People's Liberation Monument, it now stands at the centre of the Yuzhong shopping district, ringed by towers. Not tall, but perfectly placed — surrounded by malls, snack streets and underground passages, it is the local default meeting point, 'see you at Jiefangbei'. For shopping, a cup of tea or simply resting your legs, this is the handiest area.
Practical note ·
It is crowded and the underpasses are a maze — follow the signs; you can walk above or below ground.
Originally a commuter crossing for residents, the cableway is now one of Chongqing's most popular experiences: a car strung on a cable across the Yangtze, a few minutes from Yuzhong to the south bank with the river right below. The windows are small, so get to one early if you want photos. Queues can be long — buying online helps.

Cliff-side stilt houses, their lamps lighting up tier by tier after dark.
Hongyadong climbs the cliff above the Jialing, stilt houses stacked from the waterline to the ridge; with the lamps on after dark it looks like a palace hung in mid-air, often compared to the bathhouse in an animated film. Inside are shops and snacks across many levels, and you can enter from the road at the top. Evenings are extremely crowded — the best view of the lights is from the far bank or the Qiansimen Bridge.

Evenings are packed — mind your belongings, and shoot the panorama from the far bank or the bridge.
Chongqing hotpot uses a beef-tallow base in a pot divided into nine squares: the centre is hottest for a quick dip of tripe or duck intestine, the outer squares are gentler for slow cooking. The dip is sesame oil with minced garlic — it cools and lifts the flavour. Chilli levels run mild, medium and extra; if you do not eat chilli, ask for a mandarin-duck pot, half clear broth. Dishes come by the plate, usually meat first then vegetables, with sour-plum drink or a nut milk alongside.
Practical note ·
Order one level milder than you think and add later. Tripe and duck intestine need only about fifteen seconds — overcooked, they turn rubbery.
