How to spend one day in Chengdu?

The recommended plan is “One Day in Chengdu — Pandas and Teahouses”: about A full day · about 10 hours, 8 stops —Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Kuanzhai Alleys, Lunch: Sichuan Hotpot, People's Park & Heming Teahouse, Wuhou Shrine, Jinli Ancient Street, Dinner: Skewers & Sichuan Dishes, Jiuyanqiao Bridge & the Jinjiang at Night. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.

How the day is laid out

Chengdu is a city you can take slowly: the panda base sits in the northern suburbs and rewards an early start; back in town you walk from the Kuanzhai alleys to hotpot, spend the afternoon in People's Park over tea (and a famous ear-cleaning), see the Wuhou Shrine and Jinli, eat skewers for dinner, and finish by the river at Jiuyanqiao. The Chinese here is not hard, but every line is one you will actually use that day — booking pandas, ordering a half-spicy pot, asking for a tea refill, haggling, counting skewers.

March–May and September–November are best; summer is muggy, winter is grey but mild

Times, prices and opening hours change by season — confirm on the day. The order here is a sequence, not a timetable.

Lunch: Sichuan Hotpot

Huǒguō

A proper Chengdu lunch — order a split pot if you fear the heat.

Chengdu hotpot is famous for its numbing heat; the broth is usually beef tallow, and the dip is sesame oil with minced garlic. If you cannot take chilli, order a yuanyang pot — half red, half clear. Usual orders: tripe, pork aorta, duck intestine, tender beef and a plate of vegetables. Tripe needs only seven or eight seconds — any longer and it turns rubbery.

Practical note ·

If you cannot eat chilli, say 不要辣 up front or take a clear broth. You mix your own dip — garlic and sesame oil is the classic.

Bamboo chairs, lidded tea and ear-cleaning — this is how Chengdu spends an afternoon.

People's Park is Chengdu's afternoon living room. Heming is the best-known old teahouse inside: sink into a bamboo chair, order a bowl of jasmine tea, and you can sit all afternoon while staff keep topping up the water. Ear-cleaners work the park too, with a long set of tools — a Chengdu speciality people come from far away to try once.

Practical note ·

A shrine to the strategist Zhuge Liang, famous for its red-wall passage.

Wuhou Shrine honours Zhuge Liang, chancellor of the Shu Han state in the Three Kingdoms period, and adjoins the tomb of Liu Bei; it is the most important Three Kingdoms site in China. Bamboo throws deep shade through the grounds, and the red-wall passage in the rear garden is the most photographed spot. If the Three Kingdoms stories interest you, a guide makes a great deal more sense of it.

Practical note ·

Dinner: Skewers & Sichuan Dishes

Chuànchuàn

Hotpot counted by the stick — you pay by the number of skewers.

Chuanchuan is hotpot on sticks: ingredients are threaded onto bamboo skewers, cooked in the red broth, and you pay by counting the skewers at the end — more casual than a full hotpot. For proper Sichuan dishes, order mapo tofu, twice-cooked pork, kung pao chicken or fuqi feipian (beef in chilli oil), with a bowl of rice. Sichuan food looks fiery but plenty of dishes are aromatic rather than hot.

Practical note ·
