Xishuangbanna sits at the far south of Yunnan, where the Lancang leaves China to become the Mekong. The day begins at the great golden pagoda in Jinghong's Gaozhuang, takes in Manting Park and the Zongfo Temple, goes out to the Dai park at Ganlanba for bamboo houses and water-splashing, eats Dai food at noon, spends the afternoon in the tropical botanical garden, and returns to Gaozhuang for a river cruise and the Starlight night market.
How to spend one day in Xishuangbanna?
The recommended plan is “One Day in Xishuangbanna — Rainforest and Dai Country”: about A full day · about 14 hours, 8 stops —Gaozhuang · Great Golden Pagoda, Manting Park & Zongfo Temple, Dai Park · Water-Splashing Square, Dai Lunch · Pineapple Rice and Lemongrass Fish, Tropical Botanical Garden · Menglun, Lancang River · Mekong Cruise, Gaozhuang · Starlight Night Market, Riverside · Dai Barbecue to Finish. Every stop comes with Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, set phrases and cultural notes at roughly HSK 3 level.
Xishuangbanna, at the very south of Yunnan, is a Dai autonomous prefecture and green the year round — one of China's few truly tropical places. The Dai here live in two-storey bamboo houses, livestock and tools below, people above; they follow Theravada Buddhism, so every village has a temple and the stupas are gilded; and in mid-April comes the Dai New Year, the Water Splashing Festival, when the whole city soaks itself. The day starts in the prefectural capital Jinghong: Gaozhuang is a new Dai-style quarter whose great golden pagoda is the landmark; Manting Park was once the Dai prince's pleasure garden and the Zongfo Temple stands beside it; south-east at Ganlanba the Dai park shows real bamboo houses and water-splashing; lunch there is Dai food — pineapple rice, lemongrass-grilled fish, sour bamboo shoots, pounded chicken feet; the afternoon goes to the Chinese Academy of Sciences tropical botanical garden at Menglun for strangler figs, buttress roots and giant water lilies; and the evening returns to Jinghong for a river cruise on the Lancang–Mekong and the Starlight night market. The air is hot and wet and the rain comes suddenly, so carry an umbrella and insect repellent. Each stop carries the words and sentences most likely to come up that day, so you can read them aloud here and use them there.
November to April is best — cool and dry; mid-April brings the Water Splashing Festival, the liveliest and most crowded time; May to October is the rainy season, hot with frequent afternoon showers, and the rainforest at its greenest

A gilded Dai-style pagoda at the centre of the new quarter — the most recognisable thing in Jinghong.
Gaozhuang is a Dai-style quarter on the north bank of the Lancang in Jinghong; the name means 'nine pagodas, twelve villages' in Dai, and the great golden pagoda at its centre — gilded, surrounded by smaller stupas and Dai figures — is the marker of the district, blazing in the sun. By day it is quiet, and the steps in front are popular with people having their photos taken in Dai dress. The Dai follow Theravada Buddhism: shoes off to enter a temple or approach a stupa, no shorts or camisoles, and do not turn your back on a Buddha image to photograph it. That is the minimum courtesy.
Practical note ·
Shoes off in temples, no shorts or camisoles; do not turn your back on a Buddha image or gesture at it.
Manting Park lies in the middle of Jinghong and has served as the Dai princes' garden for more than a thousand years: old trees soaring, bamboo thick, a pavilion on the water, and quiet. Beside it stands the Zongfo Temple, the most senior Theravada monastery in the prefecture, its hall richly done in images, murals and a gilded roof, with many young novice monks. The park also puts on elephant and peacock shows several times a day; do not press the animals or feed them. This is a stretch to walk slowly and take in the tropical planting and the Theravada atmosphere.
Practical note ·
Do not pester or feed the animals at a show; the park is full of mosquitoes, so wear thin long trousers.

Five real Dai villages — bamboo houses, mango trees, temples, and a water-splashing every day.
The Dai park at Ganlanba strings together five genuine Dai villages rather than a built set. A Dai house is raised on posts: animals and tools below, people above, shoes off at the door. Mango, jackfruit and papaya grow in the yards, and temple roofs show gold through the trees. There is a water-splashing session every day, where visitors can change into Dai clothes and join in for luck; the mid-April Water Splashing Festival is the real thing, when the whole prefecture joins. If you would rather stay dry, watch from a distance.

Sour, hot, aromatic and fresh — pineapple for a bowl, lemongrass for seasoning; not like mainland cooking at all.
Dai cooking is the most interesting thing in Xishuangbanna: pineapple rice steams sticky rice and pineapple flesh inside the shell; lemongrass-grilled fish is stuffed with lemongrass, ginger and garlic and grilled in a banana leaf, skin crisp and flesh tender; and there is sour-bamboo chicken soup, pounded chicken feet (chopped with lime, chilli and garlic — hot, sour, appetising), lime jelly noodles, fried bamboo worms and grilled pork belly with dipping sauce. The flavour runs sour and hot, so if you cannot take chilli say 'go easy on it'. A jug of iced lime water or a Lao iced coffee cuts the heat best.
Practical note ·
Dai food is sour-hot — say 'less chilli' if you need to; go easy on street-side cold dishes if your stomach is delicate.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences tropical botanical garden at Menglun occupies a peninsula wrapped by the Luosuo River — the largest and most species-rich tropical garden in China, with more than ten thousand plants. Walk through it and you are under coconut, betel palm and oil palm, with ferns and orchids below; the best of it is the rainforest's tricks — the strangler fig, whose seed lands on another tree and whose roots wind round and kill the host; buttress roots, grown as slabs so the tree can stand; and cauliflory, flowers breaking straight out of the trunk. The garden is big; take the shuttle to save your legs, and allow plenty of time even if you walk only part.
Practical note ·
The garden is large — check the map and pick your highlights; water, sunblock and repellent are essential, and do not pick the plants.
The Lancang comes all the way down from Qinghai, crosses Xishuangbanna, and the moment it leaves China becomes the Mekong, running through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam to the sea — one river through six countries. The stretch at Jinghong is broad, with evening cruises that usually include song-and-dance and a simple buffet; sit on deck for the lights and bridges along both banks, cool in the breeze. If you would rather not cruise, a walk along the bank is pleasant in the river wind.
Practical note ·
Ask whether the cruise fare includes the meal and show; the deck is windy, so mind your phone over the water.
The Starlight market opens at dusk beside the golden pagoda and is the liveliest spot in Jinghong. The stalls fall into groups: food — pounded chicken feet, grilled pork belly, pineapple rice, mango sticky rice, grilled insects, Lao iced coffee, fresh juice; drink — coconut water and sugarcane; and goods — Dai brocade, silver, wood carving, South-East Asian trinkets, spices and tropical fruit. Prices are negotiable, especially in quantity. Keep an eye on your belongings: it is crowded.
Practical note ·
The market is crowded — keep phone and wallet in front of you; taste fruit before buying and watch the scale.
No night in Xishuangbanna is complete without Dai barbecue, and it is not like mainland grilling: much of it is wrapped in banana leaf and cooked that way — bāoshāo fish, tofu, enoki — and when the leaf comes off, lemongrass and chilli come out with the steam. There is also grilled chicken, pig's cheek, aubergine, corn and baby squash, each with a little dish of dipping sauce. Finish with a bowl of rice noodles or grilled sticky-rice cakes. The riverside is cool, you eat sitting down and talk slowly — a proper end to the day.
Practical note ·
What comes out of the leaf is scalding — open it slowly; the riverside is cool at night, so add a thin jacket.
